Humility (Tawadhu) is an attitude of modesty and the absence of arrogance in interacting with others. Islam teaches that humility brings honor, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “Whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allah, Allah will elevate his status.” (HR. Muslim). In the Qur’an, Allah forbids arrogance and commands humility, as stated in Surah Luqman: 18. Humility makes a person more beloved by Allah and respected by others. This attitude can be practiced by not considering oneself superior, respecting others, and being open to advice. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the ultimate example of humility, despite being the leader of the ummah. The virtues of humility include protection from arrogance and the strengthening of social bonds. A Muslim should always remember that all advantages are blessings from Allah. Therefore, there is no reason to be arrogant toward others. Humility also brings inner peace and harmony in life. Being humble does not mean being weak; rather, it is an awareness of one’s true position before Allah. With humility, we can more easily attain happiness in this world and the hereafter.
